Binge Eating Disorder

Binge Eating Disorder is characterized by the consumption of larger amounts of food than most people would consume in similar circumstances. There is a feeling of lack of control, and marked distress about the binge eating. It may also include eating rapidly, eating until uncomfortably full, eating alone due to embarrassment/guilt, eating even when not hungry. There are no purging behaviors. The person may be at normal or higher body weights.

 

Symptoms

Common symptoms of Binge Eating Disorder may include:

  • Hiding food or wrappers
  • Steals or hoards food
  • Low self-esteem
  • Avoids conflict; tries to “keep the peace”
  • Tries to please others
  • No regular mealtimes; skips meals
  • Social isolation, moodiness, irritability
