There are things worth talking about and setting the stage for a successful marriage. Participating in premarital counseling before you get married can help head off potential problems that you will face later in life. It can answer and align you on key questions about children, money, work, and faith. Counseling can help ensure that you are both ready and committed for marriage.
Premarital Counseling Stats
What would happen if everyone took the same amount of time and commitment to learning about and preparing for marriage as they did for studying for a test or preparing for your driver’s license? In a study published in the Journal of Family Psychology it states that couples who received premarital education had a 31% lower chance of divorce. Interestingly enough, only 32% of couples engage in premarital counseling. Considering the economic/financial, emotional, and psychological costs of divorce on individuals and families, taking steps to increase the likelihood of a long-term/life-long marriage is worth it. A study done at St. Catherine University reports that 94.6% of people who participated in premarital counseling would recommend it to other couples.
Some Benefits of Premarital Counseling
- Identify stressors: One of the benefits of premarital counseling is that it can help you identify any stressors in your relationship. Then in turn, these stressors can be addressed before the marriage is finalized.
- Communication skills: Premarital counseling teaches you effective communication tools to be applied to your life together. You may learn appropriate responses, how to avoid blaming, listening more actively, and open a dialogue about perspective.
- Dealing with Stress: Couples have to balance budgets, pay bills, and manage all the details that come their way. This can be stressful, and for some, the stress can lead to unhealthy behaviors. At the least, you may find yourself snapping at your partner or being argumentative. Marriage counseling can teach each of you to manage stress better and deal with it more appropriately and without the fallout.
